Singer Songwriters & Bands

We have an exciting opportunity for those who are looking to play out more and have the passion, desire, and drive to help us build a scene that is dedicated to showcasing new talent from all of Boston and its surrounding metro areas. This opportunity is a monthly singer songwriter and band series which will take place every fourth Tuesday of every month. Each month we will showcase different acts, provide an intimate setting for you to network with other like minded musicians, and give you the opportunity to showcase your talent. As the series expands, we will take it on the road and move it to various venues throughout the area.

Our SSS event has been in existence for almost three years, and we are looking to expand it by broadening our talent search. We are dedicated to bringing you the best of Boston's local and vibrant music scene and showcase local area talent through live events, radio broadcasts, and other media outlets. Please tune in on Thursday night 12-9-10 at 10pm on www.cyberstationusa.com and click on listen live.

More on this month's featured artist.

The Sound Of Growing Up started as an acoustic solo project by singer/songwriter Justin Kao (kay-oh) in the spring of 2008. A Boston transplant via Long Island, NY, Kao began playing shows and open mics in the Boston area, building up a network of local friends and musicians. These musicians make up a revolving cast of band members that support The Sound Of Growing Up both on stage and in the recording studio.

“Drifting” is due out early 2011

Shows coming up:
12/21 TT the Bear's
9pm. $5.
w/ In the Audience (Portland, ME) and Young and Old

Awards and Press:

Regarding the track "Drifting"

Have you ever heard, or possibly even considered what the post-modern doo-wop sound might be? Especially if it was backed by what sounds to be an oddly-amped ukulele? Is this truly The Sound of Growing Up, or is this the sound of the last human in future world, a human who has taught his robotic companions how to clap in rhythm, use a tambourine and of course play that weird electro-uke. Ignoring the grim reminder of humanity's future demise, one realizes that one can really get into the oddly off-kilter sound of the appropriately titled "Drifting." The sound of youth is tempered by the "Oh, well" tone of the vocals, as if the singer is somewhat exasperated. You want to help him, but you also delight in earnest, chin-up spirit of the performance. Maybe he'll survive after all, with a little help from the robots, God knows there are plenty of them hanging around at the Stata Center, so hang in there, little buddy. (Boston Band Crush)

"This is seriously the best band I've heard during my time at Lasell." (Justin Miller, Lasell College Radio Program Director)

"I can tell you that [The Sound Of Growing Up] is far and away the best band that has reached out to us. This band has a big upside." (Dennis Hennessey, CEO Sugarpop Records)

The Artist Manager 101

Artist Management Defined:

Managers of musical groups/acts are responsible for seeing to it that the business side of an artist or band's career runs according to the individual acts career plan. With the manager taking care of the back-end, the artist is free to concentrate on creating the music.

Managers who work with small, unsigned, independent talent usually take on a variety of various roles and responsibilities. This is commonly due to a manager acting as a single independent agent who in most cases has no affiliation with a management company or agency. In this scenario, the hired manager will work with the artist and help with the execution of scheduling band meetings, rehearsals, promotion, show planning, and booking to name a few. Typical manager compensation for services rendered is based on a gross percentage of the artist’s earnings. In cases where acts are hiring a manager who is affiliated with an artist management company, or agency, these individuals may work off an hourly rate, or on a retainer basis.

In today’s rapidly evolving music and entertainment market, more and more artists are venturing off on a D.I.Y (Do It Yourself) campaign. While it is true that you do not necessarily, need to have a manager or management team at your disposal in order to conduct your business and reach your career goals, artist managers still play a pivotal and vital role in the consistently changing musical landscape.

·         Managers visualize the big picture, while keeping the artist centered, grounded, and focused on the tasks-at-hand. Often time’s artists will loose their line of sight, their vision becomes blurry often due to the emotionally vested involvement with their projects.
·         Managers lend their experience and knowledge by providing impartial assessments and analysis.
·         Managers help to assemble strategic business objectives, and career outlines that provide effective solutions for artists. There are simply too many things needing to be done for most artists too effectively and efficiently execute alone. These include but are not limited to analyzing data, paperwork, and monitoring progress, communications, and so on.
·         Managers can aid by make the right decisions for the artist’s career.
·         Managers assist with opening doors to crucial opportunities for their artists during a period when artists are attempting to employ new creative ways to increase their exposure, and make money in this ever-evolving industry.
·         Managers act as filters and buffers to protect artists from unscrupulous individuals.
·         Managers become the first line of communications with virtually everyone, Venues, Talent Buyers, Booking Agents, Lawyers, Recording Engineers, Producers, Promoters, Publishers, and more.
·         Managers provide support through the periods of dissatisfaction, displeasure, exhaustion that the industry unleashes through the course of an artist’s career.
·         Managers bring reliability, trustworthiness, and credibility to an act. Allows the artist to be presented in a professional light and may advance negotiations with various entities thus saving you valuable time.
As we stride through this new landscape with a heavily infused do it yourself attitude, it is important to realize that although independent artists are finding some marginal success in the industry, most independent artists are simply not earning enough to transition from part-time to out full-time with regards to their music and career. Success in this industry is largely up to the artist and their individual goals. Not all artists have the desire to sign with a record label (and nor should they) because in this new music market, labels are quickly diminishing and becoming the thing of the past. As these giants fall one-by-one at alarming rates it is clear to see why this D.I.Y attitude is being adopted and advocated by so many industry insiders. However, you need to have the tools to succeed and the ability to be educated on how to use all of these tools effectively.

Plectrum Entertainment is here to help. We believe in independent artists and we are passionate about every project we decide to take on. Success is the result of combining knowledge, the right team, and the appropriate talent. Visit us at www.plectrumentertainment.com and feel free to contact us.
