Artist Management Defined:
Managers who work with small, unsigned, independent talent usually take on a variety of various roles and responsibilities. This is commonly due to a manager acting as a single independent agent who in most cases has no affiliation with a management company or agency. In this scenario, the hired manager will work with the artist and help with the execution of scheduling band meetings, rehearsals, promotion, show planning, and booking to name a few. Typical manager compensation for services rendered is based on a gross percentage of the artist’s earnings. In cases where acts are hiring a manager who is affiliated with an artist management company, or agency, these individuals may work off an hourly rate, or on a retainer basis.
In today’s rapidly evolving music and entertainment market, more and more artists are venturing off on a D.I.Y (Do It Yourself) campaign. While it is true that you do not necessarily, need to have a manager or management team at your disposal in order to conduct your business and reach your career goals, artist managers still play a pivotal and vital role in the consistently changing musical landscape.

As we stride through this new landscape with a heavily infused do it yourself attitude, it is important to realize that although independent artists are finding some marginal success in the industry, most independent artists are simply not earning enough to transition from part-time to out full-time with regards to their music and career. Success in this industry is largely up to the artist and their individual goals. Not all artists have the desire to sign with a record label (and nor should they) because in this new music market, labels are quickly diminishing and becoming the thing of the past. As these giants fall one-by-one at alarming rates it is clear to see why this D.I.Y attitude is being adopted and advocated by so many industry insiders.
